The Culpeper Story

Our story began back in 1931 when J.T. Edwards, pastor of Culpeper Baptist Church, conceived a vision to create a distinctive home for senior adults in Virginia. During his service to the church and the greater community, Pastor Edward grew increasingly aware of the responsibility of LifeSpire of Virginia (formerly Virginia Baptist Homes) to care for its aging parishioners.

About

His dream was to offer a faith-based community that provided comprehensive care while cultivating each individual’s spiritual and creative aspirations. Above all, he wanted to create a place that fostered dignity, faith and hope for retirees and their families.

Pastor Edwards’ dream was realized in 1945 when the Baptist General Association of Virginia voted to create a new ministry and opened a residential community for seniors called Virginia Baptist Homes. Three years later, thanks to the generosity of Virginia Baptists and a gift of a brick home (the Millman House), the first senior living community opened in Culpeper in 1948, thereby setting the standard for outstanding care, programs and services for seniors. The Millman House, albeit a temporary location, represented the keystone for LifeSpire of Virginia’s benevolent ministry. In 1951, the permanent Culpeper retirement community was opened under Pastor Edwards’ tutelage.

Today, we start an exciting new era at The Culpeper. Yet as we continue to grow and evolve, some things will never change. That is our commitment to great care and service, our culture, values, and vision. Just like they have since we first opened our doors more than a half-century ago, residents of The Culpeper will continue to enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing they have a secure and welcoming place to call home for the rest of their lives.

The VBH Foundation — Security and Peace of Mind
